Top 8 Christmas trends 2021

With Christmas just around the corner and the offical Christmas decorating period about to kick off (I am from the school of thought that you can’t out your tree up until the 1st of December); what better way to ease me back into blog writing than share some Christmas trends. It’s awesome to see what is popular is mostly is sustainable, plastic free, up-cycled or natural products.

1. Reusable advent calendars

These have been popular for some time but there are some stunning ones out at the moment, my favourite is this leather one from Gathre that comes in a few pretty colour options.

2. Wicker or wooden tree skirts

Wicker and rattan ones are super easy to come by this year with the likes of Kmart, the Warehouse, Spotlight and Ezibuy stocking them. I’ve had one for a few years now and it’s holding up well but if I didn’t I would be on the hunt for a wooden one like this one from Crate and Barrel.

3. Paper ornaments

I am seeing lots of paper decorations around at the moment and I’m loving them! I’ve brought a selection of creamy white ones from Farmers. If you are looking for something even fancier the A&C Homestore has a selection of them including cute paper Christmas trees that have a magnet allowing them to be easily packed up and re used year after year.

4. Orange garlands

According to youtube people have been sharing videos on how to make these for a few years now so maybe I’m late to the orange garland party but I’m still seeing them pop up everywhere and keen to do my own this year.

5. Not your traditional glass decorations

It’s great to see glass ornaments this season other than just the traditional glitter encrusted glass baubles out there. If I was brave enough to have glass ornaments on my tree with kids and pets I would pick something like the first picture. Instead I will be getting a white frosted glass and green glass tree for my dining table from The Design Depot.

6. Non plastic wreaths

I’m loving the new take on Christmas wreathes with no tinsel in sight! Whether you want to make or buy one there are some great options out there. If you want to make your own you could sign up for an online workshop such as the one from A&C Homestore or copy one of the many videos online. You can also buy a base to get you started such as this Chardonnay wreath from The Natural Co NZ.

7. Modern take on a Nut cracker

The nutcracker has had a makeover for 2021 and I’m a fan of the new clean and simple lines. I brought a plain white one from Farmers but I’m also a fan of this mixed wood & white one too!

8. DIY

DIY crafts are always popular for Christmas and here is my picks of the DIY projects of the season.

  • Painted Christmas baubles - I came across the trash to terracotta ones from Collective Genn last year and upcycled some of my own using the paint and baking powder effect that you can check out on my Instagram

  • Similar to my comments on paper ornaments, paper crafts are definitely having a moment

  • Last year I also made some air dry clay tree ornaments which so easy and fun to do with the kids that I plan on making some more this year! You can check out the ones I made last year here

Hope this helps inspire your Christmas this year. I would love to know which of these are your favourite and which ones are going to have in your house?

Merry Christmas xx
