Introducing my Mangakino bach makeover

This week our new flooring got installed at Mangakino Bach which is an exciting step on our renovation journey. I realised I haven’t shared anything on here about our current project so I decided to start with my design inspiration and a bit of background.

Background

Before making the big and somewhat troublesome move to Mangakino (this will be a story for another day) our tiny 2 bedroom 70s house sat on my family’s section in Whangamata. Interestingly this was not the first time this house has moved, my nana had it relocated onto site back in the 80s when transporting houses wasn’t really a thing.

Growing up it was always my nana’s bach so in addition to being filled with lots of summer holiday memories it was also like taking a step back in time. Despite the 70s decor and considering that it’s been moved twice it’s in surprisingly good condition. It has some great bones with an open plan living space and raked ceiling plus it’s one of those places that just has a good feel about it.

When my parents embarked on building a new place and needed the bach to go we chose to save it. We ended up finding a section in Mangakino for it to carry on life as our little family bach. To make the house work for our family we need to modernise it while keeping in mind the following:

  • It’s a very small place on a large section so some good outdoor living space(s) will be critical to extend the useable area but even more crucial is room layout and built in storage to ensure the best space utilisation.

  • I can’t do structural changes within the building consent so I need to make the most of the houses best features like the open plan layout and raked ceilings.

  • I need to keep the budget very small mostly because it’s a bach but also I need to be careful not over capitalise given the house values in the area.

  • We need to pick things that are easy care, easy install (tradies are hard to get in Mangakino) durable and somewhat timeless.

With all that in mind here is my design inspiration:

  1. White painted beams

2. Parquet floors

3. A mostly off white base

4. Neutral tones with green and black accents

5. Outdoor space that extends our living areas

6. Built in bunks

Now the exciting challenge is to bring my vision to life in a tiny space on a tiny budget. I would love to hear what about our Mangakino renovation you want me to share along the way.
